“My work is about bodies, but it’s also about who’s looking. We still take the male gaze for granted" - Adham Faramawy

Adham Faramawy is a multimedia artist, practicing in a multitude of mediums these include; Digital video, print, painting and sculpture. The Dubai-born artist deals with cultural identity, how each individual creates their own. Then compares  those identities to the identities created to feed a digital culture of mediated images, the media has a central role within our lives. Encouraging unhealthy addictions, obsessions and expectations of our own identities and bodies.

Faramawy's 'Make up tutorial' piece was influenced by his sister who is a beauty editor, she influenced him to watch make- up tutorials. This inspired Faramawy to put his own spin on this fashion trend, dealing with how media has such an impact on our lives. his approach was to make light fun of this. To mock the trend, by making a contour video that is completely wrong. Then taking it to the extreme and completely covering himself in material, this lighthearted approach is almost  fighting back at obsessive behaviours.

Faramawy influenced me to apply the medium to my body, as part of my practice I apply face paint to my body. In a way that is random and free, to create movement on the skin. Although our subject aims are different, our methods and materials remain similar. Another similarity behind that we both use the human body, he involves other models within his imagery. Whereas within mine the body is dominantly mine, this is due to the nature of the series that has stemmed from other past works. Dealing with identity and insecurities, mostly my own and how showcasing them and making yourself vulnerable to the public is endearing.
