Josephine Pryde

Josephine Pryde is a photography artist dealing with many subjects such as; medical imagery of MRI scans of the human foetus, which referred to the history of darkroom experimentation and the techniques of medical imagery. She also created a series that is inspired by 'cute pet' pictures however, her imagery had a deeper message touching on laboratory experimentation on animals.

Josephine Pryde inspired me on many levels, with her context connecting to my own work. Her practice inspired me to be more considerate with my own composition, her textures within her work are what I aim to achieve. The top left image, Cup and Ring 6 2018 is the image that is most similar to my own. This is due to a multitude of factors, my own images are mostly monochromatic I made this choice as I feel you can see the depths of texture more. The textures within this image appear as weathered as though they originate from surfaces such as stone or concrete. She's then put these two quite different in tonal value images next to each other, to create this very intriguing image. Firstly you can tell at first glance what these images are, nor does the title give any kind of clue. As the textures don't resonate with the title, this only adds to the intrigue.

The same kind of textures are present in the second image, however this one doesn't appear monochromatic but more so earth coloured. Both images seem to show characteristics of space imagery, Cup and Ring 3 2018 looks as though it could be the edge of a plant. However on the right looks like some sort of spiritual marking. Although both pieces from the Cup and Ring series contain 'Rings', these ring look as though they have either been scratched onto the surface or were already existent on that surface.

The third image is the most obvious out of all I have chosen, this simple connection between an acorn and our hands. Touch is a sense that lets us explore all opportunity, to feel that rough surface of this object of nature with our soft flesh is an important message. The nails being painted looks purposeful to mimic the texture of the acorn, my work isn't personally as obvious as this image. However it is important to showcase a strong connection between humans and nature, and that is exactly what this image is saying.

Overall, you could say Josephine helped me explore the next step of my exploration of materials and method. To see high quality texture images, like my own be so powerful in message was very beneficial for me.
